FIVE COATS FOR FIVE BODY SHAPES

Manon Baptiste’s mission? To create fashion forward, high quality pieces for plus size women. In our previous post we showed you how to find the perfect dress for your body shape, this time round we’re talking coats. Whether you’re oval, strawberry, pear, hourglass or square, we’ve found the style to suit you.

THE PEAR SHAPE COAT

With narrow shoulders and distinct hips, women who are pear shape are smaller up top and have a more shapelier bottom half.

Layered looks along with dipped hems, like you’ll find in this luxurious suede coat, are particularly flattering if you have this body shape. Your instincts may tell you that you should emphasise your narrow upper body by wearing slim-fitting tops, but this will actually unbalance your proportions and make your lower body appear bigger than it is.

The cowl neck lends light volume to the top of the coat and falls fluidly over your hips, so that your upper body is accentuated, while flattering your derriere. Plus, the slim sleeves emphasise your slender arms.

THE RECTANGLE SHAPE COAT

If you’re a rectangle shape, your shoulders and hips are roughly the same width (plus or minus about 5cm) and your waist isn’t pronounced. This means that you don’t have to balance out any of your proportions and that you can accentuate your straight silhouette with clean or asymmetric cuts.

Minimalist cuts and androgynous silhouettes, like in this pared back design look striking on you. This coat will emphasise the line of your figure perfectly through its simple, streamlined cut.

THE OVAL SHAPE COAT

Being an oval shape means you have slim legs and ankles, as well as narrow shoulders. Your widest point is the centre of your body.

Don’t make the mistake of hiding your figure under wide coats. Your ideal coat style features an open cut, like this gorgeous jacquard number and a design that skims over your stomach area. Plus, an open front is great as it will visually stretch your upper body.

Short coats also are a fabulous excuse to put the emphasis on your slender lower body.

THE STRAWBERRY SHAPE COAT

Strawberry shapes are athletic with broad shoulders, curvy upper arms and a large bust. Your biggest assets are your narrow hips and slender legs.

Your perfect coat is dark in colour or pattern, like this one, as dark tones merge into the background, making your upper body appear visibly slimmer.

Open, tailored cuts help to visually stretch and soften your athletic figure, as well as putting the spotlight onto your slim hips and slender legs. Loose sleeves offer freedom of movement for fuller upper arms.

THE HOURGLASS SHAPE COAT

Hourglass shapes are defined by a big bust, slim waist and wide hips.

Trench coats are a superb choice for hourglass figures, as they draw attention to your waist and are lightweight so don’t add unnecessary bulk. The slightly flared bottom half also flatters the hips

A classic beige style will never fall out of fashion favour, but for a more contemporary feel try giving denim a go.
